The Waterboy

Year: 1998
Genre: Comedy
Category: Football
Status: DVD
Time: 90 min.
Rated: PG-13

Synopsis:
obby Boucher, the sweet-tempered, simple-minded, bayou man-child who relishes his job of eighteen years as the much-abused waterboy for the local "good" (well-funded but nasty of spirit) university's football team. True to the appropriate cine-formula, there is also a nearby "bad" (under-funded but generous of spirit) university where Bobby seeks tenure after finally being driven away from his long-time place of employment by the relentless cruelty of those whom he seeks only to refresh and hydrate. It is under the kindly tutelage of the "lesser" university's down-and-out football coach (Henry Winkler phones it in, but warmly) that Bobby realizes his unusual athletic prowess and develops some basic people skills. Kathy Bates has an enormous amount of fun, and is a laugh riot, as Bobby's earthy, over-protective, swamp-shack-dwelling mom; and Fairuza Balk is accessibly luscious in a Daisy Mae turn as Bobby's resourceful, tomboyish, creole-cutie sweetheart.

Trivia:
. "Vicky Vallencourt"'s last name is a reference to "Tony Vallencourt" a character played by Adam Sandler on SNL. Her name also continues the tradition of the female lead in Adam Sandler movies have both her first and last name begin with the letter V.

. The line "You can do it!" is referenced in "Original Prankster" by The Offspring. The line was used again in Sandler's movies Little Nicky and The Longest Yard and was both times said by Rob Schneider.

. The wrestler Captain Insano is played by actual pro wrestler Paul Wight, also known as World Wrestling Entertainment's Big Show or as The Giant during his time in the WCW.

. Big Show made reference to his small part in the movie on an edition of RAW, when WWE Champion John Cena and World Heavyweight Champion King Booker talked about their respective movies, The Marine and Ready to Rumble. After Booker mentioned the movie, Cena and Big Show broke out in laughter, exploiting his matter of seconds on screen.

. Some people paid full admission for this movie just to see the trailer for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, then leaving after the trailer ran.

. Adam Sandler is charming and disarming as he dusts off and mashes together his beloved SNL charcters Cajun Man and Canteen Boy to create Bobby Boucher,

. The climactic Bourbon Bowl scene was filmed at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL, however the flyover shown in the film is actually of Williams-Brice stadium at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.

. Most of the extra fans present at the Bourbon Bowl are UCF students.

. Suzanne Lloyd Hayes, granddaughter of silent screen star Harold Lloyd, filed a $50 million dollar lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company in 2000, claiming that this movie was a rip-off of Lloyd's silent film classic The Freshman (1925). By 2002, the courts had ruled against her.

. When the film was released in November of 1998 it was preceded by the trailer for Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999). Many Star Wars fans who weren't fans of Adam Sandler paid the full admission price and sat through the trailer then left the theater.

. The South Central Muddogs' stadium is the DeLand High School football field in DeLand Florida, the school agreed to let the director use the field if he paid for the stadium to be refurbished after filming.

. During an interview with ESPN Lavar Arrington (LB New York Giants) mentioned that in preparation for his role in the movie, Adam Sandler had visited him at Penn State to watch him practice.
